The Border Security Force (BSF) regularly announces recruitment processes across various forces including BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, SSB, and Assam Rifles (AR). These positions include Assistant Sub-Inspector (Stenographer) and Head Constable Ministerial (HCM). For the HCM post, a rigorous Typing Skill Test is a critical hurdle in the selection process.

Force-wise HCM Vacancy Highlights (Recent Drive)

A recent combined recruitment drive featured a total of 1526 vacancies. The Head Constable Ministerial (HCM) positions were distributed across multiple forces:

HCM Recruitment Selection Process

The recruitment process generally involves three mandatory phases:

  • 1st Phase: Physical Standard Test (PST) & Physical Efficiency Test (PET)
  • 2nd Phase: Computer Based Test (CBT)
  • 3rd Phase: Skill Test (Typing Examination), Medical Examination (ME), and Document Verification (DV)

The PST/PET and Typing Skill Test are qualifying in nature. Candidates must clear all phases to be considered for final selection.

BSF HCM & Havildar (Clerk) Typing Rules

  • Typing Language: English or Hindi, as opted by the candidate on the day of the skill test.
  • Typing Font: English typing uses Times New Roman. Hindi typing uses the Mangal font.
  • Passage Length: The English passage consists of a minimum of 1750 keystrokes, while the Hindi passage contains a minimum of 1500 keystrokes.
  • Time Duration: 10 minutes for both English and Hindi Typing.

BSF vs CRPF HCM Typing Test: Format and Backspace

Preparing for the CRPF Head Constable Ministerial typing test? Practise reading and typing on the same screen. For BSF HCM typing practice, use a printed passage to build paper-to-screen reading accuracy.

Practice setups covered by this guide; confirm your recruitment-cycle instructions.

These settings are not a substitute for your admit-card and skill-test instructions. Check the applicable notice before your test.

BSF and CRPF HCM Typing Interface & Features:

For the formats covered here, practise BSF HCM paper-to-screen typing from a printed passage and CRPF HCM screen-to-screen typing from a passage displayed on the monitor. Follow the format specified in your skill-test instructions.

Backspace Rules Vary: Use backspace enabled for the BSF practice setup and disabled for the CRPF practice setup described here. Check your BSF, CRPF or CISF skill-test instructions before selecting correction settings.

There is no auto-scrolling, and no repetition of the passage is allowed once typing is finished.

Evaluation is calculated strictly using the keystroke formula of 1 word = 5 keystrokes.

BSF HCM Typing Test Error Evaluation (Mathematical Formula)

To qualify for the Typing Skill Test, a minimum speed of 35 WPM in English or 30 WPM in Hindi is required. The penalty for mistakes is extremely harsh, and the official evaluation relies on a strict mathematical formula.

Step 1: Calculate Ignored Mistakes (5% Relaxation)

An error relaxation of 5% of the total typed words is granted. Mistakes within this limit are ignored.

Ignored_Mistakes = Total_Words_Typed * 0.05 Penalizable_Mistakes = Total_Mistakes - Ignored_Mistakes

* Note: If Penalizable_Mistakes is negative, it is treated as 0.

Step 2: Apply the 10-Word Penalty

Beyond the 5% error relaxation, there is a massive penalty of 10 words for each wrong word.

Final_Penalty = Penalizable_Mistakes * 10

Step 3: Calculate Net Typing Speed (WPM)

Net_Typing_Speed = (Total_Words_Typed - Final_Penalty) / 10 Minutes

Practical Example of the Formula

Example
  • If a candidate types 400 words in 10 minutes.
  • They commit 25 Total Mistakes.
  • Ignored Mistakes: 5% of 400 = 20 Mistakes ignored.
  • Penalizable Mistakes: 25 - 20 = 5 Mistakes.
  • Penalty Deducted: 5 * 10 = 50 words deducted.
  • Net Words: 400 - 50 = 350 words.
  • Net Speed: 350 / 10 = 35 WPM (Qualified for English!).

Typing Thumb Rule:

Because every incorrect word beyond the 5% limit deducts 10 words, making just one extra mistake reduces your final typing speed by a full 1 WPM (10 words / 10 minutes). Accuracy is paramount in this exam. You must practice daily to build a speed comfortably above 35 WPM while keeping your error rate incredibly low.

Benefits of Using AR Typing Platform

  • AR Typing offers options to practice with both On-Screen passages and Off-Screen passages (PDF downloads) to perfectly simulate the BSF physical paper test.
  • You can enable or disable backspace for BSF or CRPF HCM typing practice. Use the settings specified in your recruitment instructions, including for CISF.
  • The detailed Performance Dashboard calculates your typing speed strictly according to the 5% permissible error rule and the dreaded 10-word penalty rule.
